: مف زَلَم : سِهام كان أهل الجاهليّة يقترعون بها، وكانوا يكتبون عليها الأمر أو النهي ويضعونها في وعاء، فإذا أراد أحدهم أمرًا أدخل يده فيه وأخرج سهمًا، فإن خرج ما فيه الأمر مضى لقصده، وإن خرج ما فيه النهي كف، وكانت أيضًا تستخدم عند أخذ الرأي، وفي إثبات نسب المشكوك فيه، وفي الميسر
🇬🇧 Translation:
: Singular: zalam : Arrows used by the people of the pre-Islamic period for casting lots; they would write a command or prohibition on them and put them in a receptacle. If one of them wanted something, he would put his hand in and take out an arrow. If it came out with a command, he proceeded with his intention, and if it came out with a prohibition, he refrained. It was also used when seeking advice, in proving doubtful lineage, and in gambling (Azlam/Divining arrows).
